I started Red Witch over 23 years ago.
In some ways it seems like the briefest of moments… It feels like yesterday that my infant kids were wandering around the workshop in nappies, strumming guitars sitting in stands and chortling gleefully at the ensuing sounds…
But as I write this, my youngest son, Gabe, 20, is working away at RW HQ on a batch of pedals, as part of the Red Witch team. Jude is 23 – playing bass in and managing a phenomenal NZ band called Sure Boy.
Time sure flies.
Such reflections on the passage of time actually kicked off the other day when I discovered an old, long forgotten box of new-old-stock Germanium transistors. I received these in the very early years of Red Witch. I'd set them aside and promptly forgot about them.
Until now.
What to do?
Well, we all love fuzz. And there’s something magical about fuzz that uses the glorious old power of germanium in the front end.
So... I cleaned up these wonderful antiquities, sorted them, tested them, measured them and now have them installed in my next limited edition pedal, the first for 2025:
VALENTINA – The Fuzz.
As my newly rediscovered collection of germanium transistors is comprised of all sorts of different types, each VALENTINA is “tuned” to the unique germanium transistor that it's received. Dialled in to perfection, ensuring sonic delight to all who behold her.
An original, new fuzz circuit each featuring a different hand picked, hand tuned, NOS germanium transistor in the front end.
As a result, each VALENTINA has its own unique flavour. I promise they are all delicious!
Controls for Fuzz, Gate, Bias and Volume ensure Valentina offers an expansive palate of Fuzz tones all presented in another beautiful Nouveau series enclosure.
Each VALENTINA is hand built, numbered and signed by me, using through hole components.
I’m using high spec Neutrik jack sockets that are hand wired in. The super high quality, long life true bypass foot-switch is independent from the main PCB – offering much more durability and resilience. What more could a fuzz fiend want for?
